Neighborhood History

The following excerpts are from the National Register of Historic Places Registration forms for the Twentieth Century Suburban Growth of Albuquerque (1997) and for the Monte Vista and College View National Historic District (2000). The image on the left is of Col DKB Sellers at the site of his planned Nob Hill Shopping Center, circa 1940.

In the early 20th century, Albuquerque offered significant opportunities for developers to create new commercial and residential subdivisions on the east mesa. It had become known as a health center for tuberculosis patients after the construction of the St. Joseph’s Sanatorium and Presbyterian National Tubercular Sanatorium early in the century. The University of New Mexico had been founded in 1889 and the western portion of University Heights was platted directly to its south in 1906 by Col. D.K.B. Sellers. Above is a picture is from 1936. College View Addition (east of Carlisle) was in its infancy as Hermosa Drive was the eastern frontier of Nob Hill.
