Safe City Albuquerque: Highland, Nob Hill, University is a Public Safety Improvement Project in the Highland, Nob Hill, University Area

Sponsored by the following organizations:

  • Albuquerque Police Department
  • Highland Business & Neighborhood Association
  • Nob Hill Neighborhood Association, representative Chris Smith, NA Board of Directors' member
  • Nob Hill Business Association
  • University Heights Association
  • Silver Hill Neighborhood Association
  • Individual Business Operators and Residents

Safe City is a partnership between the police department, businesses, and residents. We are working together to improve public safety in our neighborhoods. Our goals are these.

1. To communicate between the partners in order to

A. Choose and support the most effective projects and

B. To keep each other informed about methods of improving public safety such as how to report problems, how to set-up neighborhood watch programs, what the current area issues are and what is being done about problems.

2. To collectively survey problem areas and inform the City or property owners about improvements in the environment that can improve public safety.

Improvements might involve crime reporting, crime prevention measures, lighting changes, sidewalk or street layout changes, weed and litter control, nuisance property actions, and additional homeless outreach.

3. To promote business and residential development that creates friendly, safe pedestrian, bicycling, and shopping areas.

The Nob Hill Neighborhood Association will have some summaries of the work of this coalition on its web site. For more information, please contact Chris Smith or Spencer Nelson email spencer@swcp.com or telephone 268-0208.

Getting Homeless People Off the Street
The Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) provides crisis intervention, stabilization, and community education in response to police referrals and citizen requests. COAST referrals may be provided for:

 Mental Health Issues

 Suicide Intervention

 Runaways

 Homelessness

 Substance Abuse

 Elder Abuse and Neglect

 Grief Related Issues

 Basic Needs

If you or someone you know is in need of intervention and services please call the COAST Unit 761-8810. The COAST Unit will be able to help you find the resources and services to best fit your needs.

The APD is in the process of deploying its Strategic Homeless Outreach in our area of the city.  This outreach seeks to identify homeless or transient persons who have been causing concern in the area.  During the Outreach officers and service providers talk to people to identify their needs, with the objective of helping them address the issues that cause them to be homeless.  Officers are available to take enforcement action if necessary; service providers are available to connect persons to services.   Should you want to discuss an issue that you would like to discuss with this team, please call 761-8810 and leave a message if you can identify an in-need street person who routinely can be located. Of course if there is an on-going crime or medical emergency, call 911.

HEALTHCARE FOR THE HOMELESS

We want to get the in-need people who accept help off the streets. Then the police can deal better with the actual criminals. This is a big effort by the Albuquerque Police, Healthcare for the Homeless, and other agencies. Joint outreach of this type is unique among cities in the US. Healthcare for the Homeless has started a training program for volunteers to do on-street outreach, and APD has been doing training of officers in our part of town. There is going to be a workshop of groups that   work with street people sometime in late May 2007. The effort is a long-term one and we ought to ask our city and state officials to help provide resources to help get people off the streets.
