SUMMARY:Tour of 1953 Tony Edaakie Murals
DESCRIPTION:Last summer a group of Nob Hilleños was enraptured while viewing the remarkable 1953 Tony Edaakie Shalako murals at the de Anza Motor Lodge. Our own Elizabeth Chestnut shared her lifetime of expertise as she addressed visitors in the subterranean mural space. Jim Trump\, David Peters\, and Christina Rhoderick of the de Anza Motor Lodge kindly hosted us. Jean Bernstein of Flying Star Café provided baked goods and drinks.\nA neighbor who attended observed\, “We appreciated the remarks by Elizabeth and having her and Tony’s family there to provide context. The murals exceeded our expectations and made us realize again\, and in the middle of Albuquerque\, how fortunate we are to be in a place with such history…..We were humbled.”\nThis tour will take place on Friday\, July 21 in two sessions\, 1pm and 2:30 pm. It will again be led by Nob Hilleña Elizabeth Chestnut who is dedicating the tour to Tom Kennedy who was instrumental in the preservation of the murals at their original location. We are grateful for the support of Jim\, David\, and Christina at the de Anza Motor Lodge.\nOut of respect for the religious significance of the murals photography is strictly prohibited. Due to the size of the mural room space is limited and reservations are necessary. Email meyster1@me.com\nA $20 per person donation is requested for the Ancestral Rich Treasures of Zuni\, a Zuni artist co-op organized by Edaakie’s grandson Keith.
